While, like American holidays, the Midsummer celebration is now tacked onto a long weekend and will be celebrated this Friday (June 25), the term refers to the summer solstice, longest day (and shortest night) of the year. Today.
To launch Midsummer Week at Peterson’s Happy Hour, we’re pleased to report that Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden wed her former personal trainer, Daniel Westling, in a lavish, flower-filled ceremony yesterday, on the eve of Midsummer Eve. It’s a day–as we know from that Swede wannabe, Shakespeare–traditionally filled with magic, the abundance of nature, and promises of love.
The new Prince Daniel, Duke of Västergötland, helped the princess recover from anorexia and has spent the last eight-plus years in training of his own–to learn the ropes of royalty in order to “earn” Carl XVI Gustav, King of Sweden’s, (and the Swedish government’s) permission for his daughter’s hand. To add to his hurdles, last year, he was the recipient of a kidney transplant from his father to remedy a congenital condition.
Peterson’s toasts the new couple–and there will be more (much more!) about Midsummer toasting in posts to come…
