The 1920s were “… a time when celebrities could become famous because they were smart and quick.”*
Robert Benchley was both — he needed to be to keep up with the rest of the Algonquin Round Table — and so it’s so much fun to be one of 10 semi-finalists in the 2015 Robert Benchley Humor Writing Competition. You can read my (very short — I swear) piece — “A Letter to Santa Claus” — here…
In honor of all smart and quick celebs, I dug up a still of Campbell Scott playing Benchley to Jennifer Jason Leigh’s Dorothy Parker from the 1994 film Dorothy Parker and the Vicious Circle (written and directed by Alan Randolph; produced by Robert Altman, Miramax Films, and Fine Line Features).
*Quoted from the late Roger Ebert’s review of the film.
